Description

Abstract:

The compilation and the processing of GA's bathymetric data in the Gippsland basin was produced following a request by an internal client in March 2012.

Thsi data was acquired by five research vessels, the RV Melville from SCRIPPS Institute, the N/O L'Atalante from IFREMER, the RV Maurice Ewing from Lamont Dohert Earth Observatory (LDEO), the RV Marion Dufresne from IPEV and from CSIRO's Southern Surveyor.

The Gippsland basin was devided into two grids:

1- Gippsland1 and extends from Longitude 146degrees and 13.1 minutes to 150 degrees and 47.77 minutes East and Lattitude -37 degrees and 27.1 minutes to -40 degrees and 17.1 minutes South WGS UTM55, 100m resolution.

2- Gippsland2 and extends from Longitude 146 degrees and 45.1 minutes to 149 degrees East and Lattitude -38 degrees and 23 minutes to 39 degrees and 53.4 minutes South WGS UTM55, 30m resolution.

Positional accuracy:

Visual assessment of the grids indicated that its logical consistency is good.

The RV Southern Surveyor used a DGPS and four antennae connected to GPS receiver with an accuracy of 2 to 3m.

Attribute accuracy:

High quality swath bathymetry data that form an aerial coverage esists, ovelapping swaths and speed of sound corrections show that the data are quite accurate. Some transit swath data also have speed of sound corrections applied and are assumed to be highly accurate.

Logical Consistency:

Visual assessment of the grids indicates that its logical consistency is good.

Each of the area input dataset was examined in detail and edited where necessary. The Gippsland basin bathymetric data was compiled from different intersected generic surveys and those overlapping generic surveys were corrected as welll GA's bathy database.

Completeness:

All of GA's single and multibeam bathymetry data holding was used to produce the grids
