Geoscience Australia carried out marine surveys in Jervis Bay (NSW) in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (GA303, GA305, GA309, GA312) to map seabed bathymetry and characterise benthic environments through co-located sampling of surface sediments (for textural and biogeochemical analysis) and infauna, observation of benthic habitats using underwater towed video and stills photography, and measurement of ocean tides and wave-generated currents. Data and samples were acquired using the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) Research Vessel Kimbla. Bathymetric mapping, sampling and tide/wave measurement were concentrated in a 3x5 km survey grid (named Darling Road Grid, DRG) within the southern part of the Jervis Bay, incorporating the bay entrance. Additional sampling and stills photography plus bathymetric mapping along transits was undertaken at representative habitat types outside the DRG. This 110 sample data-set comprises salinity, dissolved oxygen, water temperature and light attenuation (KD) measurements from Jervis Bay.

Data quality


Bottom water column characteristics (water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and degree of saturation(%DO)) and photosynthetically active radiation were measured at each station to provide background environmental data. A YSI 600XLM sonde was used for DO, temperature and salinity, and a LI-COR light metre (LI-250A) for PAR. The benthic measurements were taken from within a half metre of the seabed. The light attenuation coefficient (Kd) between the surface and benthic PAR measurements were calculated from a standard equation (Kd = ln (lo/l2)/z) in which lo and lz refer to PAR at the surface and at depth, and z is the water column depth.

Positional accuracy:

A C-NAV system was used to provide geographical position with a manufacturer accuracy of 10 cm RMS. However, the instruments may have been dragged by currents such that the readings may deviate from the GIS position.

The same data acquisition procedures were used for the three surveys that contributed to this dataset. An error was identified in the salinity measurments from June and August. These datasets are not reported.
