Sediment Data for Jervis BayNote: This metadata describes the dataset in accordance with the ANZLIC (Australia New Zealand Land Information Council) Core Metadata Guidelines Version 2. Dataset citationANZLIC unique identifier: ANZCW0703016223 Title: Sediment Data for Jervis Bay CustodianCustodian: Geoscience Australia Jurisdiction: Australia DescriptionAbstract: Geoscience Australia carried out marine surveys in Jervis Bay (NSW) in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (GA303, GA305, GA309, GA312) to map seabed bathymetry and characterise benthic environments through co-located sampling of surface sediments (for textural and biogeochemical analysis) and infauna, observation of benthic habitats using underwater towed video and stills photography, and measurement of ocean tides and wave-generated currents. Data and samples were acquired using the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) Research Vessel Kimbla. Bathymetric mapping, sampling and tide/wave measurement were concentrated in a 3x5 km survey grid (named Darling Road Grid, DRG) within the southern part of the Jervis Bay, incorporating the bay entrance. Additional sampling and stills photography plus bathymetric mapping along transits was undertaken at representative habitat types outside the DRG. Seabed sediment samples were collected by a Shipek grab at a total of 126 locations. (see Anderson et al. 2009). Sediment grabs typically recovered a sample up to 5 cm by 12 cm in area and 5 cm thick, from which a 50 - 100 g sub-sample was taken to a depth of ~2 cm. Sub-samples were stored in plastic bags and refrigerated. ANZLIC search words:

Free Data DownloadData qualityLineage: In the laboratory, samples were used for grain size analysis only. Grain size measurement was undertaken by wet sieving to determine mud (less than 63 microns), sand (63-2000 microns) and gravel (greater than2000 microns) fractions as percentage of dry weight. A separate sub-sample (~1g) was used for laser diffraction measurement of the mud and sand fractions using a Malvern Mastersizer 2000, with results expressed as percentage of the total particle volume based on an average of three measurements on each sample. Summary statistics include arithmetic mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis. Sediment data for Jervis Bay are a first generation product derived from the physical samples. No transformation of the data has been undertaken. Positional accuracy: Approximately 5 m, based on uncertainty of the grab position when lowered from the vessel. Attribute accuracy: The accuracy of laser derived measurements are checked by glass bead verification, whereby glass bead standards are analysed and verified against specification details for that batch of beads. Logical Consistency: All samples in this data set were sampled and processed using a standard operating procedure, details of which can be obtained from Geoscience Australia upon request.
