Processed multibeam backscatter data of the Carnarvorn ShelfNote: This metadata describes the dataset in accordance with the ANZLIC (Australia New Zealand Land Information Council) Core Metadata Guidelines Version 2. Dataset citationANZLIC unique identifier: ANZCW0703016233 Title: Processed multibeam backscatter data of the Carnarvorn Shelf CustodianCustodian: Geoscience Australia Jurisdiction: Australia DescriptionAbstract: Geoscience Australia carried out a marine survey on Carnarvon shelf (WA) in 2008 (SOL4769) to map seabed bathymetry and characterise benthic environments through co-located sampling of surface sediments and infauna, observation of benthic habitats using underwater towed video and stills photography, and measurement of ocean tides and wave-generated currents. Data and samples were acquired using the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) Research Vessel Solander. Bathymetric mapping, sampling and video transects were completed in three survey areas that extended seaward from Ningaloo Reef to the shelf edge, including: Mandu Creek (80 sq km); Point Cloates (281 sq km), and; Gnaraloo (321 sq km). Additional bathymetric mapping (but no sampling or video) was completed between Mandu creek and Point Cloates, covering 277 sq km and north of Mandu Creek, covering 79 sq km. Two oceanographic moorings were deployed in the Point Cloates survey area. The survey also mapped and sampled an area to the northeast of the Muiron Islands covering 52 sq km.. 0308_carnarvon_shelf contains processed multibeam backscatter data of the Carnarvorn Shelf. The SIMRAD EM3002 multibeam backscatter data were processed using the CMST-GA MB Process, a multibeam processing toolbox co-developed by Geoscience Australia and Curtin University of Technology ANZLIC search words:

Access constraints: The raw data is not to be released. Contact custodian for more information. Order ProductData qualityLineage: The backscatter data were processed using CMST-GA MB Process v8.11.02.1 software. The fully processed backscatter strengths were corrected for transmission loss and insonification area. The process within the toolbox also involved removal of the system transmission loss, removal of the system model, calculation of the incidence angle and removal of the angular dependence. The angularly equalised backscatter strengths were normalised to the backscatter strength at an angle of 25 degrees. Positional accuracy: Inherited from raw data in which C-NAV system was used to provide geographical postion with a manufacturer accuracy of 10 cm RMS. Inherited from raw data in which Applanix system was used to provide roll and pitch, and heave with manufacturer accuracies for roll and pitch are 0.05 deg. RMS, and manufacturer accuracy for heave is 5 cm. Attribute accuracy: The accuracy is high since all the computaion has been conducted in double precision. Logical Consistency: All procedures and steps involved in backscatter processing within the software used were kept similar Completeness: completed Contact information
