Description

Abstract:

The Petrel Sub-basin Marine Environmental Survey GA-0335, (SOL5463) was undertaken using the RV Solander during May 2012, as part of the Commonwealth Government's National Low Emission Coal Initiative (NLECI). The survey was undertaken as a collaboration between the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and GA. The purpose was to acquire geophysical and biophysical data on shallow (less then 100m water depth) seabed environments within two targeted areas in the Petrel Sub-basin to support investigation for CO2 storage potential in these areas. This 10 sample data-set comprises specific surface area and bulk (%) carbonate data from surface seabed sediments (~0-2 cm) in the Timor Sea.

Lineage:

Bottom sediments were collected using a Smith McIntyre grab. The surface sediments (~0-2 cm) within the grab were spooned into falcon vials and the porewaters were removed by centrifugation. Bulk carbonate was determined using the carbonate bomb method. Specific surface areas were determined using a 5-point Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) adsorption isotherm on a Quantachrome NOVA 2200e analyser, with nitrogen used as the adsorbate. The samples were first cleaned of organic matter by slow heating for 12 hours to 350oC.

Positional accuracy:

Inherited from raw data in which C-NAV system was used to provide geographical position with a manufacturer accuracy of 10 cm RMS. Inherited from raw data in which an Applanix system was used to provide roll and pitch, and heave with manufacturer accuracies for roll and pitch are 0.05 deg. RMS, and manufacturer accuracy for heave is 5 cm. However there are spatial offsets between the C-NAV system and the grab that were not measured but are presumed to be in the order of meters..

Attribute accuracy:

Good . plus/minus 0.1% for specific surface area and +/- 1.0% for total carbonate

Logical Consistency:
