Abstract

A joint hypocentre/model determination program developed at the Phillip Institute of Technology has been used to convert actual earthquake data into anindependant interpretation of the crustal structure, which includes shearwave velocities. Models for a two layer and a three layer crust (named WA2 and BLUE respectively) have been prepared. The two layer model seems to produce better results than the three layer model as measured by the standard deviations of location residuals, using a sample of 32 earthquakes. Both models give better fits than the WA1 model. The average standard deviations for the WAl, WA2 and BLUE models are 0.24, 0.16 and0.19 seconds respectively.
