Abstract

If an average Australian was asked to draw a map of all of Australia, they would sketch the Australian continent and Tasmania. Some of the cleverer people may include a few of the bigger islands, such as Kangaroo Island off South Australia and Fraser Island off the coast of Queensland. Did you know that in fact Australia is much larger than most people realise? Much, much larger. Australia has one of the largest land and water jurisdictions in the world. What is a jurisdiction? A jurisdiction is an area governed by a single country. In this area, that country (also known as a State) can pass laws and the people that live there are citizens of that country. Australia's jurisdiction is made up of land on two continents, thousands of islands and millions of square kilometres of sea.
