Lineage

The refineries dataset was digitized in 2012 from orthophotos and satellite imagery held within Geoscience Australia. Image resolution ranged from 0.15m to 0.5m. Source Information: The primary information source used to locate and attribute the refineries was the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission December 2008 report entitled Monitoring of the Australian Petroleum Industry. The refinery name, suburb, owner and capacity were obtained from this report. Due to the large size of the features, they were easily identified from imagery. Publicly available information from owner/operator websites was used to confirm the locations and complete the attribution of the features. Polygons representing the extent of the entire facility were digitized to create a Liquid Fuel Refinery Areas feature class. The point feature class was derived from the polygons by using FME to generate a single point within each of the refinery polygons. These points are in most cases centroids and have identical attribution to their corresponding polygon.
