Abstract

The Australian Government, through Geoscience Australia is undertaking a series of regional-scale, geological studies to assess the CO2 storage potential of sedimentary basins, including the Petrel Sub-basin. This report details the findings of the CO2 storage potential of the Petrel Sub-basin project between July 2010 and July 2013. It was found that the Petrel Sub-basin is suitable for carbon dioxide (CO2) geological storage with two Mesozoic reservoir-seal pairs identified over a large area in the centre of the sub-basin. The Mesozoic reservoirs have a large effective CO2 storage capacity of 15.9 GT (300 TCF). Through a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive regional-scale study, this work advances the knowledge of the Bonaparte Basin as a plausible site for CO2 storage.
