TASMAP: Understanding Major Geological Elements and Mineral Potential
Project Description
In collaboration with Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT), the University of Tasmania, and the Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (based in Italy), Geoscience Australia has initiated a new project 'TASMAP' (the Tasmanian mapping accord' project). TASMAP has evolved from the successful TASGO project, which was completed in 1997. That earlier study was largely based on the acquisition of large geophysical (aeromagnetic and seismic) datasets (see, for example, AUSGEO News 25, for December 1994, front page; and 26, for February 1995, p. 4), but Geoscience Australia also generated new geochronological data to integrate with them (see, for example, AUSGEO News 39, for April 1997, front page). Data from both disciplines identified a major geological issue, which TASMAP will address.

Project Outcome
Enhanced exploration strategies, and promotion of, Northern Tasmania through a better understanding of the tectonic evolution of the region.

Project outputs
- Report on crystallisation ages of a suite of granites, and the age distribution of the inherited zircons within those granites, with data entered into OZCHRON database.
- Reports summarising the results of TASGO and TASMAP projects (geochronology, seismic data, and integrated geophysics) as contributions in a joint Mineral Resources Tasmania / Geoscience Australia publication.
