The purpose of the Fundamental Gravity Network Project is to upgrade the Australian Fundamental Gravity Network. This network consists of about 900 documented gravity stations situated at or near to 250 locations throughout Australia and its Territories. Each station has been measured to a greater precision than is considered normal for exploration survey stations with al being measured using two or more relative gravimeters and measurements were taken at the station on two or more occasions. All the stations in the network have been linked to create a consistent framework to which all other gravity surveys can be related. The national network has been accurately tied to the worldwide network to ensure international consistency of Australia's gravity data.
The Fundamental Gravity Network Project will upgrade the Australian network by making absolute gravity measurements at selected network stations using a portable absolute gravimeter. The existing network will then be adjusted to these absolute stations providing a continent wide network based on absolute rather than relative measurements.
Gravity values and descriptions of individual Fundamental Gravity Network stations can be obtained via the Online GIS.
As many of these stations are visited infrequently, please forward any information about their status to Ray.Tracey@ga.gov.au so the station descriptions can be updated.
Improved calibration of gravity surveys across Australia and its offshore Territories.
