1. Southern McArthur Deep Seismic now online

A deep seismic reflection survey was undertaken in late 2002 to examine the fundamental basin architecture of the southern McArthur Basin, particularly the Batten Fault Zone. Geoscience Australia (GA), the Northern Territory Geological Survey and the Predictive Mineral Discovery Cooperative Research Centre combined to acquire an east-west deep seismic reflection profile approximately 110 km long that commenced 15 km west of Borroloola. Results of this survey are now published as The 2002 Southern McArthur Basin Seismic Reflection Survey, Geoscience Australia Record 2004/17, 78pp. It is available to download free of charge from the GA website at the following address: http://www.ga.gov.au/about/corporate/ga_authors/publications_free.jsp

2. National Geological Data Model (NGDM v1.0) released

NGDM v1.0 is designed to be a relatively simple standard data format that can be used by government, industry and academic organisations.

The model contains proposed data structures and authority tables for geological attributes compiled by geologists and IM specialists from all state, territory and federal Geological Surveys under the Government Geologist's Information Policy and Advisory Committee (GGIPAC).

The National Geological Data Model (NGDM v1.0) is a proposed national model for describing features commonly found on digital geological maps.

3. SEEGrid II Conference on Implementing Interoperability for an Australian Solid Earth and Environmental Sciences Grid, Canberra March 15-16 2005

The Solid Earth and Environment Grid (SEE Grid) is an established National and International Community of Practice actively engaged in the development of open standards for geo- and environmental science interoperability. Its objective is to foster the development of open standards and the adoption of those standards to enable new services, particularly those involving large quantities of information and massive computation, to be readily accessible to the Minerals Industry and Academia. It involves cooperation to achieve consensus on the standards so that other organisations are able to build upon the infrastructure.

The SEEGrid ll conference will focus on interoperability, which is the key technology to improving real time online access to data housed in each survey by linking all government geoscience agencies through the Australian Geoscience Portal.
