1. Tanami Seismic Workshop, June 2006 - advanced notice

The results from the Tanami deep seismic reflection project will be presented in Alice Springs on 21 June 2006 as part of the 3 day Evolution and Metallogenesis of the North Australian Craton Workshop. Put these dates in your diary now. The seismic workshop will work through the interpreted seismic data, resultant depth constraints on the crustal architecture and three-dimensional geometry of the Tanami region, and implications of the seismic results on the mineral systems within the region. 2. Update on geophysical survey data acquisition

Western Australia

The Paterson Central airborne magnetic and radiometric survey is 56% complete. This survey is comprised of east-west flight lines at 400 metre spacing with a ground clearance of 60 metres.

Geoscience Australia will manage the flying program in the three new survey regions of Western Australia: Ashburton, Musgrave, and Officer Basin.

UTS Geophysics has been awarded a contract to collect a nominal 100 000 line kilometres of new airborne magnetic and radiometric data over an area of the Ashburton district. The survey of east-west flight lines spaced 400 metres apart with a ground clearance of 60 metres covers approximately 34 920 km² over the Wyloo, Mount Bruce, Roy Hill, Edmund, Turee Creek, Newman, Mount Egerton and Collier standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas. The survey will commence by 30 June.

Fugro Airborne Surveys has been awarded a contract to collect a nominal 82 000 line kilometres of new airborne magnetic and radiometric data over two separate areas of the Musgrave region. The survey will commence by 30 June.

• The Musgrave North area: north–south flight lines spaced 400 metres apart, with a ground clearance of 80 metres, covers approximately 16 220 km² over the Cobb, Bentley and Scott standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas.
• The Musgrave South area: east–west flight lines spaced 400 metres apart, with a ground clearance of 80 metres, covers approximately 11 700 km² over the Talbot and Cooper standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas.

WorleyParsons GPX has been awarded a contract to collect a nominal 105 000 line kilometres of new airborne magnetic and radiometric data over an area of the Officer Basin. The survey of north-south flight lines spaced 400 metres apart with a ground clearance of 60 metres covers approximately 37 330 km² over the Collier, Bullen and Trainor standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas. The survey will commence by 30 June.

Queensland

In the Bowen-Surat region:

• Gravity survey at 4 km station spacing - data acquisition was completed on 7 April.
• Airborne magnetic and radiometric survey of east-west flight lines at 400m line spacing with a ground clearance of 80 metres- data acquisition for Bowen–Surat South was completed on 9 April. Bowen–Surat North airborne magnetic and radiometric survey is 47% complete.

In the Mount Isa area:

• A gravity survey at 2 km station spacing commenced on 10 April by Daishsat. The survey is 25% complete.
• Fugro Ground Geophysics has been awarded a contract to collect a nominal 9898 new gravity stations over an area of approximately 78 000 km² in the Mount Isa region of Western Queensland. The survey will be collected at 2 km station spacing for the Dobbyn and eastern section of Camooweal 1:125 000 Map Sheet areas, and at 4 km station spacing for the Lawn Hill, Donors Hill, and the western half of the Mount Isa and Camooweal standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas. The survey will commence by 4 July.
• In Isa South West, Fugro Airborne Surveys commenced an airborne magnetic and radiometric survey of east-west flight lines at 400 metre line spacing with a ground clearance of 80 metres on April 3. The survey is 24% complete.
• Fugro Airborne Surveys has been awarded a contract to collect a nominal 101 200 line kilometres of new airborne magnetic and radiometric data over the south-eastern Mount Isa region of western Queensland. The survey of east-west flight lines at 400 metre spacing with a ground clearance of 80 metres covers approximately 35 880 km² over the Machattie (eastern two-thirds), Betoota (Wantata and Mooraberree 1:100 000 sheets), Connemara and Brighton Downs standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas. The survey will commence at the completion of the Isa South West airborne geophysical survey.

Northern Territory

Requests for quotation closed on Wednesday 26 April for provision of gravity coverage in the Jervois region of the NT. Approximately 3600 new gravity stations will be collected at a station spacing of 2 km. The survey covers the Huckitta, Tobermory, Illogwa Creek and Hay River standard 1:250 000 Map Sheet areas. The survey will commence in the second half of May.

3. Upper Burdekin-Fitzroy web application released

The Burdekin-Fitzroy project was set up to work under the National Geoscience Agreement with the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (QDNRM), and Cooperative Research Centre for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration (CRC LEME). The aim was to produce a catalogue of geoscience data and information that is available for the region, and to identify key knowledge gaps that should be filled. The Burdekin-Fitzroy web application and an accompanying report are the outputs from this project. The GIS is not designed as a planning tool but is an on-line catalogue of available data and information.

A soon to be available report on the project will provide brief summaries of datasets for the Burdekin-Fitzroy study region compiled from sources including QDNRM, Geoscience Australia (GA), CSIRO and private companies. Some of the information is confidential and can be obtained only from the appropriate custodians. The report is designed to be used with the interactive GIS and is intended as a guide to what data is available within the GIS. It has examples of how to integrate the data.

The report and interactive GIS consists of geological, geophysical, geochemical, topographic, hydrologic, hydrogeologic and cadastre information. The data (where possible) are spatially located on maps of the study region. There is also a comprehensive bibliographic index of information relevant to the Burdekin-Fitzroy region. This resource provides the user with reference material relating to their searches within the confines of the study region. This is available through links at the bottom of the map page of the Burdekin-Fitzroy web GIS.
