Minerals Alert, November 2005
1. Proceedings of the Gawler Craton Seismic Workshop 2004Proceedings of the Gawler Craton Seismic Workshop 2004 are available as a Geoscience Australia Record. The Record contains abstracts and explanatory notes from presentations given at the Seismic Workshop and Data Release, held in Adelaide in August 2004. Two orthogonal deep crustal seismic reflection profiles, totalling 250 line kilometres, were acquired near the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au deposit. The data image the crustal structures that controlled the formation of iron-oxide Cu-Au mineral systems in the region of the giant deposit. Granitic plutons and Neoproterozoic cover successions are also well imaged. For further information, please email Roger Skirrow; or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9442. Copies of the seismic data can be obtained on DVD for a cost of $90 + GST by emailing Tim Barton or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9625. 2. 2003/04 Curnamona Deep Seismic Survey - Seismic Data ReleaseThe seismic data collected during the 2003/04 PIRSA/pmd*CRC Curnamona Deep Seismic Survey has recently been released. The survey consists of one regional traverse, 03GA-CU1. The seismic data is available on CD and includes SEGY data, TIFF images of sections and surveying data. Copies of the CD can be obtained by emailing Tim Barton or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9625. 3. Curnamona Seismic Workshop: AnnouncementOn 30 November 2005, Primary Industry and Resources South Australia (PIRSA), the Predictive Mineral Discovery Cooperative Research Centre (pmd*CRC) and Geoscience Australia will be hosting a seismic interpretation workshop (please see program below) to present the recently completed 2003/2004 Curnamona Deep Seismic Survey Results. The workshop will be held in PIRSA's main 7th Floor conference room, 101 Grenfell St, Adelaide, South Australia. The workshop runs from 2:00pm to approximately 5:30pm. Attendance is free. Curnamona Seismic Workshop Program
Information on the workshop and details on registration will be placed on the PIRSA website. Further information can be obtained by emailing Russell Korsch, or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9495. 4. Australian Nickel Conference PresentationA keynote presentation titled 'Nickel sulphide deposits in Australia: Challenges and new opportunities' was given by Dean Hoatson at the Australian Nickel Conference 2005 in Perth on 19 October 2005. The presentation reviews the characteristics and resources of Australia's nickel sulphide deposits and highlights some of the more important challenges and new opportunities confronting the nickel industry today. For further information, please email Dean Hoatson, or phone on +61 (0)2 6249 9593. 5. Mining 2005Geoscience Australia and the state and Northern Territory geological surveys held a joint exhibition and promotion at Mining 2005, 26-28 October in Brisbane. David Champion gave a presentation titled 'New Insights into Intrusion-Related Gold-Copper Systems in the Tasmanides'. This presentation is based on and extends the work reported in AusGeo News (September 2005, Issue 79). For further information, please email David Champion, or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9215. 6. Release of new geophysical datasetsThe following geophysical datasets have been released, or are due to be released shortly, and are available from Geophysical Archive Data Delivery System (GADDS).
For further information, please email Murray Richardson, or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9229. 7. Geophysical surveys in progressThe following surveys are currently in progress:
For further information, please email Murray Richardson, or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9229. 8. Contracts for new geophysical data acquisition, QueenslandTwo contracts have been awarded to acquire gravity data as part of the Queensland Government's four-year $20 million Smart Exploration Initiative to stimulate exploration investment in Queensland.
Requests for quotation for the first airborne geophysical survey projects as part of the Queensland Government's Smart Exploration Initiative have been released. These are for provision of magnetic and radiometric coverage in two areas:
When completed, the projects will release a total of more than 381 000 line kilometres of magnetic and radiometric data to the public domain. The new data will be acquired on east - west flight lines spaced 400 metres apart with a ground clearance of 80 metres above ground level. Geoscience Australia will be managing the flying program. For further information, please email Murray Richardson, or phone +61 (0)2 6249 9229. 9. Going for gold in north Queensland and the TanamiMineral explorers searching for new mineral discoveries will be interested in two articles in the latest issue of AusGeo News, Geoscience Australia's corporate magazine. Datasets of various metallogenic parameters for intrusive and country rock units in north Queensland which will assist in the search for intrusion-related mineralisation systems have recently been updated. There are also details of the seismic acquisition project in the Tanami region which was recently completed. For further information visit AusGeo News (September 2005, Issue 79). 10. New 1:1 million geology of eastern Australia availableSeamless outcrop geology data is now available for all of the eastern states of Australia, from Tasmania to Cape York, at 1:1 million scale. The data provides an invaluable baseline dataset for large-scale regional and national evaluation of resource potential, environmental issues, and land use. The digital data is available either in state sections on CD or can be downloaded free from the Geoscience Australia website. For further information visit AusGeo News (September 2005, Issue 79). 11.
