Open Day

The more than 6000 visitors who ventured out on a cold Canberra day for Geoscience Australia’s 2016 Open Day were not disappointed, with many opportunities to engage with the fascinating work that we do.

It was great to see visitors of all ages spread throughout the building and grounds of Geoscience Australia, learning about the wide range of geoscience work that we do and its day-to-day relevance.

The science talks were all well attended, with line-ups out the door for the Geology of Minecraft and What does Pokémon GO have to do with Positioning talks. For adults, the Australia's National Mineral and Fossil Collection and A day in the life of a geoscientist talks also drew big crowds.

Some feedback from visitors included:

“It was a great day out with excellent activities for all ages.”

In the spirit of this feedback, a huge thank you goes to the Geoscience Australia staff who volunteered on the day. It’s great to see so many sharing their work with passion and enthusiasm!

In 2016 we had a number of external organisations join us to demonstrate how our information and services contribute to Australia - showing how Geoscience Australia’s Value to the Nation comes to life.

We look forward to welcoming the community back again in the future.
