Geoscience Australia's 2016 Open Day is a family focused event providing a great opportunity to showcase our work to the public and to broaden the community's understanding of the importance of geoscience in everyday life.

What to expect

Geoscience Australia's Open Day offers a diverse program [PDF 4.4MB] of free hands-on activities, science displays and talks for all ages.

Come along and learn about the exciting and important work carried out by Australia's national geoscience organisation. Talk to real scientists, learn about geoscience careers and find out how important geoscience is to our everyday life.

For the kids

Erupt your own volcano or go gold panning like a traditional miner! Bring your own rock from home to have it identified by one of our geologists! Become a sea floor detective or catch the Minecraft and Pokémon talks.

Meet members of the ACT Rural Fire Service crew and Defence team who will have their fire trucks and marine vessel on display.

Pick up your visitor passport when you arrive and collect all the stamps as your explore the world of geoscience. *Prizes awarded to the first 500 children aged 3-10.

Visitors can also enjoy free face painting, balloon modelling, farmyard petting zoo and a Jurassic themed jumping castle.

The onsite café, Café Rocco, will be open for business offering hot food and morning and afternoon tea snacks. There will also be a sausage sizzle available for purchase.

We also encourage you to bring along a packed lunch and enjoy the lawns surrounding the building.


Onsite parking is available, although limited. Disabled parking will be allocated in the first row of the carpark. The Pialligo SES team will be assisting us with traffic and parking on the day so please obey all traffic directions and signage.
