The count-down is on to Earth Science Week 2013, with annual celebrations due to kick-off in a few weeks. Find out how you can 'rock' October and map your world.

Geoscience Australia will again be hosting Australia's Earth Science Week celebrations from 13-19 October 2013, with the international theme for Earth Science Week of 'Mapping our World'.

The theme promotes awareness of the many uses of maps and mapping technologies in the geosciences and highlight how Earth scientists use maps to understand the world around us. It also encourages young people and the broader community to learn about how maps are used to represent the features of our natural and built environment.

Schools, libraries and community organisations from across Australia are also invited to take part in the upcoming Earth Science Week celebrations by organising a local event or display to highlight the importance of mapping in our lives. You might like to organise and lead a geocaching activity, using the activity guide prepared by Geoscience Australia's Education Officers, or maybe undertake some tasty science and host an Earth Science Bake-Off!

Entries for the 2013 Top GeoShot photographic competition close on 27 September, with the winners announced at a special ceremony that will be held at Geoscience Australia during Earth Science Week.

Geoscience Australia scientists will also be out and about in the Canberra region presenting public lectures during Earth Science Week on a range of topics including petroleum geology, the geology of Australia, satellite monitoring and how robots are helping to improve GPS.
