There will be more to Geoscience Australia's National Science Week activities than just our Open Day, with several public lectures by our scientists taking place across Canberra.

Tsunami: How wet will you get?
Geoscience Australia risk hazards expert Dr Jane Sexton will present a public lecture at Questacon on Tuesday 13 August explaining the science being done to better understand tsunami risk.

Dr Sexton's talk Tsunami: How wet will you get? will look at tsunami history in Australia, how tsunami are generated and how tsunami modelling can be used to fill the gaps in our understanding and estimate the potential tsunami impact to the Australian community.

Above and Beyond
Geoscience Australia is also hosting a public lecture by Dr Valerie Neal from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. on Thursday 15 August as part of a special National Science Week international guest tour.

Dr Neal's presentation Above and Beyond, will explore multiple revolutions in aeronautics that have led to the present day aviation, concluding with a perspective on the future of aviation and space flight.

Dinosaurs Down Under - The LIPS of Death
Last but not least, Geoscience Australia palaeontologist Dr John Laurie will also present a public lecture titled Dinosaurs Down Under - The LIPS of Death at the National Dinosaur Museum on Saturday 17 August.

Dr Laurie's talk will explain the current understanding of major extinction events during geological history and their most likely cause - volcanic eruptions in Large Igneous Provinces (LIPS).
