Offshore Canning Basin Integrated Magnetic and Seismic Interpretation Study

2007 Offshore Canning Basin Release Areas W07-12 to W07-15, Western Australia

Geoscience Australia, under a contract awarded to Encom Technology Pty Limited, has undertaken an integrated magnetic and regional seismic interpretation of the Offshore Canning Basin 2007 acreage release areas (W07-12 to W07-15) to assess their petroleum prospectivity. Bids for the release areas close on 17 April 2008.

The study is based on interpretation of the new high-resolution magnetic data across the release areas, and has been integrated with interpretation of regional seismic data and well information (Fig.1) provided in Geoscience Australia's 2007 Acreage Release Data Package. The magnetic interpretation was undertaken by Clive Foss (Encom); the seismic interpretation and analysis of petroleum plays was undertaken by a sub-contract to Vic Ziolkowski, Oil Exploration Consultants (OEC); and Wayne Stasinowsky (Encom) managed the project and reviewed the magnetic and seismic interpretations.

The study includes:

  • Regional magnetic and gravity interpretations shown on structure elements map
  • High-resolution magnetic interpretation, including several enhanced grid transforms
  • Magnetic depth model estimates for approximately 250 profile traverses and over 1000 individual anomalies
  • Interpretation of major seismic horizons (including basement, Pillara reef complex, base Grant Group, top Grant Group, Bedout unconformity, mid Triassic, base Jurassic, base Cretaceous and intrusive bodies)
  • Integration of magnetic and gravity trends with seismic fault traces
  • Depth correlation of modelled magnetic anomalies with structure contour maps of interpreted seismic horizons
  • Potential petroleum play types (maps and seismic sections) (Fig. 2 and 3)

Encom PA Vieweris an interactive geophysical interpretation tool for the analysis of data in point, profile, drillholes, grid, RGB image, remote sensing, GIS vector, 3D models (Fig.4), 3D meshes, document and spreadsheet formats that can be visualised dynamically in 1D, 2D and 3D.
This viewer combines magnetic and seismic interpretation of the Offshore Canning Basin 2007 Acreage Release Areas with regional tectonic elements, gravity and magnetic data.

Run the installation directly from the download link provided below. During the installation the software will be placed in a folder on your local drive at: C:\Program Files\Encom\Encom PA directory and a desktop icon called Encom PA 7.5 will be placed on your desktop screen.

To start Encom PA Viewer either double mouse click on the desktop icon or choose the Encom PA software from the Start>All Programs menu of your desktop. Click on the splash screen displayed to continue and a dialog will appear asking you to Set a Project Folder. Click on the "Select a new project folder" button and navigate to the directory where the Canning Basin project data is located.

To view the project data click on the File menu and select the Open Session option. If the project folder content is not displayed in the Open Session dialog that appears click on the Project button in the top right of the dialog and choose one of the three session files (.EGS) provided by this project, and then click OK.

Close the File Loading Location Report dialog that appears initially and then the session file will load and a display window will appear. For further information on navigating, printing and turning layers on and off please refer to the provided Users Guide, which can be accessed from the Help menu.

For further information on the individual session files please refer to the PA Viewer readme.doc file which is accessed from the PostProcess.zip file downloadable from the link below.
