Project description

This program provides scientific and technical support to Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism for the release of offshore petroleum exploration areas. It also undertakes assessment of the petroleum potential of offshore Australian basins and to promote the petroleum prospectivity of Australia.

Project outcome

A broad awareness and acceptance of the technical opportunities of the acreage offered by the Australian government for petroleum exploration investment. Also, an effective assessment of the petroleum potential of offshore Australian basins to assist with the identification of potential new petroleum provinces and to contribute to future marine planning.

Project outputs

  • A technical report for the 2008 Acreage Release to the Australian and international petroleum industry.
  • Provision of ongoing advice to the Australian Government.
  • Provision of pre-competitive information to industry on the petroleum potential and prospectivity of offshore Australian basins.
  • Promotion of Australia as an attractive exploration destination at national and international petroleum conferences.
