Southwest Margins

Project description

This project involves basement, basin and petroleum system studies undertaken on the southwest continental margin within the Australian Marine Jurisdiction. The area of interest encompasses the Perth and Mentelle basins and extends from the southern Carnarvon Basin to the eastern Naturaliste Plateau.

Project outcome

An improved understanding of the petroleum prospectivity and resource potential of the Mentelle and Perth basins on Australia's southwest margin. As part of the Offshore Energy Security Program, this will:

  • maximise opportunities for the discovery of a new oil province
  • underpin promotion of selected areas for petroleum exploration via acreage release
  • reduce exploration uncertainty through provision of new data and interpretive information
  • underpin future marine planning through the acquisition of new data.

Project outputs

  • Planning, scoping and acquiring geophysical datasets to underpin petroleum assessment and marine planning. Datasets include commercial 2D seismic data, potential field data, marine geophysical data and samples.
  • Interpret geological and geophysical datasets and provide new data, results and concepts to underpin petroleum prospectivity assessment and support for acreage release.
  • Compile, assess and review existing geological and geophysical data for the northern Perth Basin. Plan, scope and design a program for data acquisition to underpin regional petroleum assessments and support future acreage release.
