Floodwaters Goondiwindi to Narrabri

Geoscience Australia acquired SPOT 2 satellite images showing the impact of floodwaters from the Queensland/New South Wales border town of Goondiwindi south to the town of Narrabri. The image at right consists of 12 scenes in which floodwaters inundating the region are visible as green and light blue.
The SPOT 2 satellite image below left was acquired over the Namoi River, between the towns of Walgett and Wee Waa on 23 November 2000, the day the Namoi River near Wee Waa peaked at about eight metres. Extensive flooding is evident.
The image at right shows the same area of the Namoi River in December 1997, without floodwaters.

The Namoi River catchment area is more than 350 kilometres long and stretches from Walcha in the east to Walgett in the west. Other river systems in the region include the Gwydir, Castlereagh, Hunter, Macquarie, Macleay, Manning, Culgoa and Condamine.
