Remote Sensing Information Services

Overview

The purpose of Remote Sensing Information Services (RSIS) Project is to manage client relationships and provide remote sensing advice, expertise, products, services and support for the acquisition of new data.

Services include the distribution of remote sensing data and information to environmental and community safety decision makers. Remote sensing data is acquired from Earth observation satellites. The satellites include Resourcesat-1, Landsat, ALOS (Advanced Land Observation System) and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer).

Project outcome: The ongoing timely availability of relevant satellite data, image products and knowledge in support of government, academia, and the private sector. Resulting in enhanced potential for the Australian community to obtain economic, social and environmental benefits through:

  • improved resource management and environmental protection
  • safer communities and infrastructure
  • an environmentally sustainable Australia
  • frontier technologies for building and transforming Australian industries.

Status

The Landsat Contingency Plan for data acquisition and distribution is nearing the distribution stage and finalisation. Imagery has been downlinked from the Resourcesat-1/IRS-P6 satellite since 14 February 2008.

Achievements to date

  • Implementation of new processing procedures for data from the ALOS satellite to remove distortions due to the terrain.
  • New MODIS satellite data product made available as a daily, continental, cloud-free image. Uses range from monitoring the on-set of high fire hazards during summer through to long-term studies of land use.
