Printed Topographic Maps
Geoscience Australia produces a topographic map series for the entire country at varying scales. In conjunction with the Department of Defence, we also produce more than 2000 topographic maps at 1:50 000 scale, predominantly in Northern Australia.

Predominantly in northern Australia, along major transport routes and other selected areas. At this scale 1cm on the map represents 500m on the ground.

At this scale, 1cm on the map represents 1km on the ground. Each map covers a minimum area of 0.5 degrees longitude by 0.5 degrees latitude or about 54km by 54km. The contour interval is 20m. Many maps are supplemented by hill shading.

This series of maps covers the whole of Australia at a scale of 1:250 000 (1cm on a map represents 2.5km on the ground) and comprises 513 maps. This is the largest scale at which published topographic maps cover the entire continent.

This series of maps covers the whole of Australia in 49 maps and forms part of the International Map of the World map series. At this scale 1cm on the map represents 10km on the ground.
Our theme and reference maps provide a complete look at Australia in one map. They show similar features to the topographic maps but with less detail.
