To use this facility you need to know the latitude and longitude of the location for which you want to calculate the rise and set times. There are several ways you can determine this:

Use the National Gazetteer of Australia to determine the Longitude and Latitude

Place name:

Place Type:

This query searches the Gazetteer of Australia 2012, which is a compilation of more than 370,000 geographical names across Australia as at January 2012.

Copyright of the Gazetteer of Australia resides with the relevant State, Territory and Commonwealth governments within Australia, who are the custodians of the information within their jurisdiction.

The custodians of the data do not guarantee that the data is free from errors and omissions. If you are experiencing difficulties with this application or you have identified possible errors or omissions in the data please contact clientservices@ga.gov.au.

New: As well as being fully updated by the Commonwealth and State Government authorities, the gazetteer now includes many extra, unofficial Homestead names added by Geoscience Australia.

How to Use

Enter the first few letters of a place name and press the "Submit Query" button. To refine your search, either select the place type or State/Authority from the lists. To clear the information, click "Reset".

If your search does not produce the desired result, modify your search. For example, key in either Mt Isa, Mount Isa, Isa Mt or Isa. Omitting "Mount" or "Mt" should still produce the correct answer.

Some locality features have alternative names. Should your search display a second place name that does not match your initial query it is the result of the query engine searching for and displaying an alternative official name. For example if you submit a query for "Mount Acres" the alternative official name "Helmshurst" is also displayed. Note that the homestead names from Geoscience Australia sources are unofficial names.
