Come and explore the wonders of geoscience when Geoscience Australia hosts its annual Open Day on Sunday 18 August.

A range of science talks, tours and activities for all ages will be offered throughout the day highlighting Geoscience Australia's broad range of work in the fields of petroleum, mineral, marine, mapping, groundwater and natural hazard research.

Find out how scientists from Australia's national geoscience organisation are helping to secure Australia's energy future, better prepare communities for natural disasters and contributing to the discovery of Australia's hidden mineral wealth.

Try panning for gold, sieving for sapphires, make your own slime, check out Australia in 3D, or become a seafloor detective.

Join one of the tours to see the new robot which helps make your GPS more accurate, check out our laboratories, see where Australia's earthquakes are monitored in the Operations Hub of the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre or visit Geoscience Australia's rock dating instrument, the SHRIMP.

Visitors will also be able to navigate the grounds using a GPS, take a walk through geological time, decorate a dinosaur, make their own pet rock or bring along a rock from home and have it identified by one of our experts.

The roving Erth dinosaur will also make a return by popular demand.

Geoscience Australia's Open Day is part of National Science Week (10-18 August 2013), an annual nationwide celebration of the wonders and benefits of Australian science.
