Geodatabase Rules

At 1:100 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to all feature occurrences.

At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

All conveyors are to have an accompanying TextNote 'conveyor' unless the word ‘conveyor’ is included in the name. The name of a conveyor will be held in the TextNote field.

Map Rules

Conveyors will be masked where black type unavoidably overprints the feature. The break measurement will be 0.2 mm on either side of the type where it crosses the feature. (Note: the feature will be masked only on the map and will be complete in the data.)

Geodatabase Rules

At 1:100 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to all feature occurrences.

At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

New features smaller than the minimum size for inclusion will be represented as Mine Points. (see Mine Point).

Mine Areas are NOT to be textnoted with descriptive text indicating the mineral which is extracted.

Tailings dumps not adjacent to a mine will be textnoted ‘tailings’.  

Abandoned mines will be labelled 'abandoned'.

Where a Open Cut Mine Area is no longer associated with any mining activity and has since filled with water to the extent that it is now a permanent 'lake type feature', then it should be captured as a Lake. This is in spite of the feature type definition saying it must be naturally occuring as it is now a key hydrological entity not held behind a dam structure.

A textnote may be included where its known function is expanded beyond that of the strict definition of a Mine Area, and where it would provide additional meaningful detail to the map. A descriptive note of "mine" is not to be used. Where applicable textnotes should be ordered so that status information such as 'abandoned' or 'disused' follows the known function descriptions e.g. 'tailing dumps disused'

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

A Mine Point must exist within the extents of each Mine Area except where the Mine Area is representing a tailings dump not adjacent to a mine. The Mine Point should have the indentical attributes of the Mine Area.

The following cannot overlap or appear inside Mine Areas;
Any other polygons in the Physiography or Industry feature datasets.  

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - External to Associated Dataset

The following cannot overlap or appear inside Mine Areas;
AircraftFacilityPoint, AircraftFacilityArea, Airport, Built Up Area, Contours other than of type connector standard, Watercourses, Spot Elevations, Sea, any polygon in either the Waterbodies or Vegetation datasets.

Map Rules

Mine Areas are NOT to be labelled with descriptive text indicating the mineral which is extracted.

Tailings dumps not adjacent to a mine will be labelled ‘tailings’.  

Abandoned mines will be labelled 'abandoned'.

A descriptive note may be included where its known function is expanded beyond that of the strict definition an open cut mine, and where it would provide additional meaningful detail to the map. A descriptive note of "mine" is not to be used.

Indicative revision source material for mines will be supplied. However, mines will be retained from the existing base material/digital data unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist and new mines will only be added when their position can be verified on the imagery or other reliable revision source material.

This feature may be used to indicate a small group of mines.
 
Mines larger than 140 625 square metres at 1:250 000 and 22 500 at 1:100 000 scale will also be shown as Mine Area features.

Abandoned wells will have ‘(abandoned)’ at the end of the descriptive note or name.  

For offshore Petroleum Wells associated with an oil platform named or identified on base material/digital data or source revision material, a Textnote will added either with a generic 'oil platform' or the applicable platform name e.g 'Baracoota Platform'

Text Note field should be added when directed in the Geodatabase Rules or if descriptive information is known about a feature that is not covered by any other item in the feature class and expands on the definition of the feature.

Geodatabase Rules

At 1:100 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to all feature occurrences.

At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

Storage tanks will be shown when the features are sufficiently prominent to serve as landmarks.

This feature will be used to represent the location of an individual storage tank as well as groups of tanks. A group of tanks that cannot be shown individually may also be shown by a representative pattern.
 
Storage tanks are to have an accompanying textnote eg 'storage tanks', ‘oil tanks’ unless a description is included in the name.
