Road destination arrows and the name of the destination will be shown from all edges of the bounding Graticule.

The use of road destination arrows will be consistent with the use of kilometric distance indicators, that is, roads with distances shown will also have road destination arrows where they meet the bounding Graticule. When road destination arrows and related text unavoidably clash with Graticule values or are too close to the trim line, see the 1:100 000 Layout Guide in Appendix B.


The Road destination arrow will be placed in the map margin and will be oriented to show the direction of the destination point. The Road destination arrow will be labelled (textnoted) with the name of the destination and the road distance to the destination point, to the nearest kilometre from the bounding GDA94 graticule.

1:250 000

Road destination arrows and the name of the destination will be shown on the western and southern map edges only.

The use of road destination arrows will be consistent with the use of kilometric distance indicators, that is, roads with distances shown will also have road destination arrows where they meet the western and southern neatline. When road destination arrows and related text unavoidably clash with Graticule values or are too close to the trim line, see Appendix B chapter 11 for 1:250 00.


The Road destination arrow will be placed in the map margin and will be oriented to show the direction of the destination point. The Road destination arrow will be labelled (textnoted) with the name of the destination and the road distance to the destination point, to the nearest kilometre from the neatline.

General - All Scales

Road destination arrows will normally be shown on dual carriageway, principal and secondary Roads.

The destination will be a significant town or locality, generally on the adjoining map.

A Kilometric Distance Indicator will be placed at the intersection of the road and the neatline for all map edges when associated with a destination arrow, and aligned so that the symbol falls within the map sheet. A MapNumber associated with a Kilometric Distance Indicator will only be maintained for those Kilometric Distance Indicators falling on a neatline.

1:250 000

A Kilometric Distance Indicator will be placed at the intersection of the road and the neatline on the south and west edges when associated with a destination arrow. For the north and east edges, a Kilometric Distance Indicator will be placed at the intersection of the road and the graticule line at the inner edge of the map bleed, and preferably will be aligned so that the symbol falls within the bleed edge. Where there is a destination to be indicated within the bleed edge, a road distance will be given to that destination from the graticule line. A MapNumber associated with a Kilometric Distance Indicator will not need to be maintained at 1:250 000.

General - All Scales

Distances shall be measured to the nearest kilometre.

Used to show distances between two significant features eg between towns, major road intersections and road junctions or a combination of the above.

The flow direction arrow will be used for the last chain of watercourses which dissipate and where the direction of flow may be unclear. The flow direction arrow must be coincident with the node at the downstream end of the feature. No direction of flow arrow will be added when the downstream end of a watercourse stops at, or within, a waterbody feature dataset polygon, or where direction of flow can be reasonably determined from the interpretation of the topography.

The flow direction arrow should be orientated so it appears that the stream connects directly through the centre of the arrow symbol (e.g. approximately 30 degrees should exist between each branch of the arrow and the drainage centreline.) See symbol dictionary for example.

The oversize symbol 271 will be used when the national road number annotation can not comfortably fit within the boundaries of the standard symbol. This will generally be the case when the national road number is formed by 3 or more characters.

A road marker will be placed on each route as specified in Section 2, chapter 5.9.

National road markers will preferably be placed clear of other map detail.

No feature type field exists for this annotation feature class. The feature type has only been included throughout the specification documentation for ease of reference.

Only Annotation associated with, or derived from, entities in feature classes grouped within the Cartography feature dataset should exist within the CartographyAnno feature class.

Wherever possible annotation should be stored using the subclasses indicated under AnnotationClassID. Annotation stored as inline text should be kept to a minimum.

Type for large polygons and long linear features may be held in an annotation feature for each word to allow for spacing and differences in orientation, see Section 2 chapter 4.

Annotation should not contain any HTML tags within the blob element, nor should it contain any special characters. The exception to this rule is the special unicode symbols for the degree and accent signs respectively for the graticule feature and font size HTML tags for map grid values in the bottom left of the map layout. .

Editing and placement of Annotation should be conducted in the appropriate Lambert Conic Conformal Projection (with two standard parallels and a central meridian per each chart's requirements) to ensure the spatial position of type on the map face can be correctly represented.

Annotation should only occur where the associated feature either has a sufficient dimension size or Upperscale value to be shown at 1:1 000 000 scale and is associated with specific WAC text requirements.
