News Introducing the Digital Atlas: Unlocking the Power of Location-Based Data

Published:18 July 2023

In an exciting step forward in how we access and use location data, the Digital Atlas of Australia beta was released to the public on 30 June 2023. The interactive, secure, and easy-to-use platform brings together, curates and connects trusted data from across government. Anyone, anywhere can explore, analyse and visualise data on Australia's geography, people, economy and environment.

As part of the initial beta release, the Digital Atlas provides users with access to a selection of data, interactive applications, and maps. However, this is just the beginning. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, future releases of the Digital Atlas will focus on enhancing functionality and expanding the range of data available.

Geoscience Australia is working hand in hand with partners across government to shape the future of the Digital Atlas. Our goal is to build a comprehensive and reliable resource that drives progress and enables data-driven decisions for meaningful impact. Powered by an Integrated Geospatial Infrastructure, the Digital Atlas connects data across borders, sectors, and disciplines, paving the way for enhanced efficiency, and better informed, sustainable outcomes.

The Digital Atlas, an Australian Government Initiative, has emerged as a significant milestone in the government's pursuit of becoming a world-leading digital economy by 2030. Introduced as part of the Digital Economy Strategy and Australian Data Strategy in the Federal Budget 2021-22, this initiative is central to improving the accessibility and discoverability of valuable data held by Commonwealth organisations.

As the Australian Government's primary authority on location information, Geoscience Australia plays a pivotal role in the development and delivery of the Digital Atlas. Leveraging authoritative data and capabilities, along with strategic partnerships and national geospatial leadership, Geoscience Australia is at the forefront of driving this transformative initiative.
