A range of tools are available to assess groundwater resources. The available tools can be grouped into two broad categories: desktop and field-based.

Choosing the appropriate method to assess groundwater resources depends on the local conditions and the objectives of the assessment. Methods which can be used to assess the nature and characteristics of groundwater resources include:

drilling
hydrogeological mapping
hydrochemical analyses
groundwater modelling
remote sensing techniques.
