Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources

Page last updated:10 August 2026

Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources (AECR) is Geoscience Australia’s annual publication presenting a stocktake of our nation’s non-renewable energy commodity resources—gas, oil, coal, and uranium—as well as the status of emerging low carbon solutions including carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen and geothermal energy resources.

AECR provides important data on Australia’s position in the global energy supply chain as a reliable trade and investment partner with a diverse mix of energy resources and strong exports. It demonstrates that Australia’s traditional energy resources will have a central role in supporting the transition to net zero emissions and contributing to our future energy security. It also highlights the nation’s huge potential to provide low carbon solutions for our region including deployment of CCS and production of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen products.

Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources 2026

AECR 2026 provides resource estimates of the nation’s non-renewable energy commodity resources as well as an overview of projects and developments related to clean energy technologies being developed in Australia to meet emission reduction targets. Non-renewable energy commodity resource estimates are as at the end of 2024 and are grouped according to commodity type, reserves and annual production.
