Deep dives

Page last updated:1 April 2025

Six deep dive regions were selected as part of the first 10 years of the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiate based on their potential for critical minerals and strategic materials, and other resources needed for the net zero transition, e.g. clean energy generation, transmission, battery storage, and geological storage of hydrogen, as well as being identified as a strategic location of interest to state and territory jurisdictions.

Deep dives are detailed, multi-commodity assessments that aim to enhance our understanding of resource prospectivity in selected onshore regions. By collecting and interpreting more data, and at finer scales, we will reduce exploration and investment risks in areas with unrealised resource potential.

Regional geoscience

We will collect and analyse regional-scale data on the geology and resource potential of the region. These completion dates are indicative, and the exact location and extent of the Deep Dives may be subject to change due to future consultation and research planning.

Major milestones:

  • 2027 – complete the Delamerian deep dive and commence deep dive 3
  • 2029 – complete the Birrindudu region deep dive and commence deep dive 4
  • 2032 – complete deep dive 3 and commence the deep dive 5
  • 2034 – complete deep dive 4 and commence deep dive 6

A map showing 6 deep dive regions selected for detailed assessments during 2024-34. Exact locations and extents may change through consultation and research. Geoscience Australia consults with land and sea connected peoples before undertaking new activities and obtains permission from land managers before accessing land.

Tech pull-through

We will pilot new technologies to drive geoscience innovation.
