Geoscience Australia kicks off an exciting program of scientific seminars for the year

25 February 2022

Geoscience Australia continues to make science accessible for everyone, with an exciting program of public talks kicking off for the year.

Newly appointed Director of Discovery and Engagement Rod Kennett said the Wednesday Seminars hosted by Geoscience Australia were a great resource, not just for members of the scientific community but for the general public as well.

“At Geoscience Australia we strive to make science engaging and inspiring for people from all ages and backgrounds, and these regular seminars that we host are designed for a range of both technical and general audiences.” said Dr Kennett.

“Delivered by leaders in their respective fields, these talks are a freely available way to get the inside scoop on a range of scientific topics from some of Australia’s brightest minds.”

The first seminar in the 2022 series was an illuminating presentation on Green Steel and the growing potential for this renewable energy source in Australian Industry.

In this talk Dr. Stuart Walsh and Dr. Changlong Wang, offer expert insight into how Green Steel provides a means to decarbonize steel manufacturing, and facilitate growth of the hydrogen industry.

If you missed it the talk is available here.

Director of Discovery and Engagement Rod Kennett said one of the key strengths of our Wednesday Seminars is that educators, students, industry, grassroots organisations, and governments get a sense of the skill and science at play within Geoscience Australia and our contribution to the wider Australian community.

“In the pipeline for our 2022 series are presentations covering topics including ‘The Global Earthquake Model: Achievements and Future Plans’ and ‘Cretaceous to Cenozoic controls on the genesis of the shelf-incising Perth Canyon’ and I would highly recommend anyone with an interest in science or the challenges of our time tuning in,” Mr Kennett said.

“We are particularly excited about our upcoming International Womens Day panel discussion which will see three very different but equally passionate women from Geoscience Australia explore the intersections between advancing gender equality and building sustainable organisations and a sustainable world.

“I am so proud to be working at Geoscience Australia and an excited to see our people and science take centre stage on a regular basis with the Wednesday Seminars.”
